    Mario RPG on SNES
All pictures ripped by me from ZSNES emulator

The controls are typical of your average joe Square RPG until you get into a fight. During battles, the buttons each have a designated use such as a button for attack, magic, or items. Pressing these buttons brings down a menu which lets you choose your attack (or whatever it is you’re doing)during the action. What’s interesting is tha you can “time” moves or press the button during a move to continue the attack, take off more damage, or take less damage in defending. Funwise, this game is a lot like Earthbound in the fun category. The cahracters use unusual items to attack their foes: inflatable fists, cymbols, koopa shells, parasols, and frying pans-it’s just so crazy and intuitive. There’s plenty of cool things you’ll find and numerous bonus games to keep coming back to. What’s really cool about the game is that it takes Mario, his friends and the Mushroom Kingdom a step further in expanding the world(s) around them after the previous Mario adventures. The battle system is pretty cool and a lot of the places you go to are pretty crazy and twisted in their design. Also, a lot of places you visit are sorta like little dream lands of sorts….. cloud cities, monster towns and bean vallies where you can climb beastalks all over the place. In terms of difficulty, it really depends on if you’re a good level gainer. Stronger you are, the easier it is.

The story starts out as the typical Mario adventure: Princess Toadstool is kidnapped by Bowser and is held hostage in his castle and Mario’s gotta rescue her. After dueling it out with Bowser, his castle is taken over by a huge giant sword (see what I mean by crazy and intuitive?) named Smithy… who eventually starts taking over the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario’s mission is to find seven stars strewn all over by Smithy’s minions that will bring peace to the land. Along the way Mario recruits Mallow, a cloud kiddy who thinks he’s a frog, Geno, a doll brought to life to serve as a guardian of the seven stars, Bowser, and Princess Toadstool. All the characters fit into the story well and add their own tidbits of personality to the game. Overall, the story is moderately good and fits the fun mood the game was set up to represent. I thought the story was sort of short and only enough to kep me occupied for about three days, maybe this is bad, but I don’t think so. The crazy wacky plot overides the length of the game here.

Graphically, the game is pretty cool and like Earthbound-colorful and lively. All the graphics are 3-d rendered and the action takes place in areas with a 3/4 perspective. The characters’ special moves are alright-some are cool while others are just plain stupid looking. Mario doesn’t really have too much variety in his moves… just modified versions of the previous skill ex: Jump, Super Jump, Ultra Jump…. Other than this, the graphics are polished looking and very well done. Musically, it’s half and half. You’ve got good tunes and bad ones. Some are bizarre and quirky and some are more dramatic. Either way you look at it, the soundtrack fits the game rather well.
Plenty of things to do and a couple hidden things to keep you searchin’. Trying to find all the hidden treasure boxes, picking up all the frog coins, and defeating Culex take some effort to do-keeping you tied up for a weekend or maybe a week.Good replay.

Oh man, Super Mario RPG, that was another classic piece of game. It was played a LOT by me. Geno was the man. That’s all I have to say about that.

Mario RPG is one my SNES games, I also played it a LOT. Granted, it had its flaws, but I still had a lot of fun playing it and finding all the secret stuff. Did anybody else buy the weird mini-game from the pissy kid in Toad Town or find the hidden casino?

Yea, the casino was awesome… the bug game wasn’t as great, but still fun.

You know, if Ha posts enough, he could overtake Ultima and get his own section. He could call it Hangin’ With Ha!
