Welcome to the debut of the Video Game Song of the Day! I’d hate to start this whole thing of with something boring, so let’s try something awesome instead…

Chrono Cross – Scars Left By Time

    Game: Chrono Cross
    Developer: Squaresoft
    Publisher: Square EA
    Platform: Playstation
    Year: 1999
    Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda

The opening theme of Chrono Cross, and a great way to start off one of the Playstation’s finest RPG’s. Chrono Cross is a pretty good game as far as quotes go too, so I’ve included a few of them underneath. The first quote is the one that appears on the screen as Scars Left by Time plays. Enjoy them for now, and expect something a little different tomorrow.

Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now,
From deep within the flow of time…

But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves…

Yet even then we ran like the wind
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies…

    Opening Theme, Chrono Cross
    ______________________________

    Insanity leads to chaos
    Then to solitude
    The fruitless effort of adding
    Meaning to what is meaningless
    A lone, crimson tear
    Falls to the sea…
The echo of the remaining star
Cries out in the infinite vacuum
    The least I can do
    Is send my distant prayers
    Over the wind of time,
    Setting sale on dreams…

    Arni Villager, Chrono Cross
    ______________________________

Wilt thou change this world… Or wilt thou change thyself? Wilt thou live
on with thy mother planet… Or wilt thou turn thy back on the planet and
    tread another path?

    Water Dragon, Chrono Cross
    ______________________________

Fate has no forgiveness for those who dare stand against it.

    Game Over, Chrono Cross
    ______________________________

There’s nothing in the world as ruthless or impartial as death.

    Miguel, Chrono Cross
    ______________________________

In order to survive, all living things in this world fight desperately and
devour those they defeat… Must one kill other living things in order to
survive? Must one destroy another world in order to allow one’s own world
to continue? The wounded in turn wound and torment those weaker than they
themselves are… There are only the killers and the killed… The sinners
who are judged, and the victims that do the judging. What meaning is there
    to such a world?

Time Devourer (Dragon Gods), Chrono Cross

God, Chrono Cross was EXCELLENT… I hated beating it, cause I knew it was over. I’m forcing squier to play this soon.

Congrats on 1000th by the way…

It’s a great game that not everyone has played, so I decided to start off with it. It’s an awesome song too, one of the few that really stands out. All the music is good, but most of it can’t be enjoyed unless it’s being played in the game, during the scene or town that it was meant for.

Video game music often requires stellar musicianship, and so you can’t just write it video game music off as “childish.” This proves it. The percussion and strings are amazing.

You can really see the talent of these composers of video game music of the last 5 years. The sound quality is so much better, and alot more effort has been put into the music then simply a person playing a keyboard. Most of these composers also conduct the music that’s being played. These people have real talent, and not only this, but they have to conform in order to fit the mood of a particular setting or theme. The best music I actually will feature will probably be opening and ending themes, since the composers seem to have the most freedom in these songs. Also, another thing you may notice, most of the music will probably be from RPG’s. In particular, these games feature the richest sound because of their epic nature.

I was actually going to pick that today…but now since you’ve ruined the surprise, I’m going to have to change it.

I might get around to doing that one. I also like Garden of the Gods, Arni Village, and Magical Dreamers holds a special place in my heart as being the most bitchin’ song ever to grace a video game concert.

Also, the Arni Village song keeps making me think I’ve heard it in another game before. I keep thinking Final Fantasy X.

I never got Mel or Guile, but not getting Nikki…

You deprived yourself of getting one of the best scenes in the game.
